Progress in power engineering is connected today with Gas Turbine Units (GTUs) and Steam and Gas Units (SGUs). Though the first GTU patent was obtained by J. Barber in 1791 in England, i.e. the idea of GTU is known already for more than 200 years, its implementation became possible approximately 50 years ago due to industrial capability. The first gas turbine has been manufactured by the Swiss company BBC (then ABB and nowadays "Alstom").

6.2.1. Prospects of application of gas-turbine and combined-cycle units in thermal engineering

Development of gas turbine (GT) and combined cycle (CC) units. Fuel balance of thermal power plants of the Russian Federation with the prevailing share of natural gas (more than 70 %) should predetermine a wide application of the combined-cycle technology for power generation. This applies especially new construction in regions, provided with natural gas.

Binary CC units were designed in Russia during 1990-1995.

Detailed description of CCUs is provided below.

Combined cycle unit CCU-450Т. Northwest thermal power plant, commissioned in 2000 in St.-Petersburg, is the first power plant in Russia, equipped with large combined cycle units of binary type (CCU-450Т) with high efficiency, unreachable in steam turbine units. The efficiency of power unit CCU-450T in a condensing mode makes more than 50 %, fuel consumption rate is more than 85 %, and power generation to thermal consumption ratio is more than 1300 kW.h/Gcal.

6.2.3. Coal-fired combined-cycle units

Coal-fired combined-cycle units with coal gasification under pressure. Technology of coal gasification under air blow pressure in a gas-dust flow was developed is the State Institute of Nitric Industry and Fuel Institute in Freiberg (Germany). Design of a test-industrial CC unit, using this technology, was developed by VTI in Russia within the federal scientific and technical program “Environmentally clean energy”.
